Davit Zalkaliani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, thanked Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Foreign Minister of Turkey, for his statement on Georgia's NATO membership.
"Dear Mevlut, thank you for your encouraging support to Georgia in its relentless pursuit to become a member of NATO. The importance of your support is even more pronounced, given the challenges currently facing. We hold firmly to our chosen path to NATO," reads the statement written by Zalkaliani on his Twitter account.
Mevlut Cavusoglu, while interviewed by Bild newspaper, said that Turkey fully supports Georgia's NATO membership at a time when Germany and France are avoiding the issue not to aggravate relations with Russia.
The Foreign Minister of Turkey spoke about this issue at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
"I do not understand why we did not invite Georgia or activated MAP for Georgia to become a member. People often criticize us for a better neighborly relationship with Russia, but our Western friends refuse to invite Georgia because they do not want to provoke Russia. Georgia needs us, and we need an ally like Georgia. We need enlargement, and Georgia must become a member," Chavushoglu noted.
