Geneva International Discussions: 51st round to be held on 10-11 December

The 51st round of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) will be held on December 10-11.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia says that Georgia will raise the issue of Russia's illegal steps in the region, with the situation being particularly exacerbated amidst the pandemic.

"Within the framework of the GID, the Georgian party will elaborate on the steps by the Russian Federation to annex the occupied regions, including the recently approved program on the common socio-economic space between Russia and Abkhazia, as well as the meetings between the representatives of the occupation regime to form the so-called ally state.

The issue of the violations of the EU-mediated 12 August 2008 Ceasefire Agreement, the current unlawful militarization, military exercises, the so-called process of borderization in Georgia's breakaway regions, and the necessity that Russia comply with the ceasefire agreement will also be put forth.

The Georgian side will focus on the necessity of releasing illegally detained Georgians by the occupation regime, including the issue of Irakli Bebia's arrest, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison before the Geneva Discussions," the statement by the Foreign Ministry reads.

According to the statement, the representatives of Georgia will also cast light on the seriously bad humanitarian situation in the regions of Akhalgori and Gali. The importance of ensuring free movement, providing residents of the regions with urgent medical aid will also be emphasized. Additionally, the instances of ethnic discrimination and the necessity to stop it will be stressed.

The statement says that the Georgian party will also raise the issue of the need for resumption of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism(IPRM) meetings in Gali and Ergneti

"One of the main topics of the 51 round of the GID will be a safe and decent return of IDPs from the regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali to their homeland," the statement reads.
