The Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia has resigned. He made the statement at a briefing at the government administration.

He named the arrest of Nika Melia, the chairperson of the National Movement, as the reason behind his resignation.

As Giorgi Gakharia noted, it is unacceptable for him to enforce any legal measure against one specific person, even at the risk of the health, life, or political escalation of Georgian citizens.

According to him, in the light of the current situation in the country, the measure like this one should only be taken when all kinds of risks are reinsured to have no escalation occur in the country.

"Unfortunately, I could not reach a consensus with my team on this issue, so I decided to resign. Of course, I believe, and I want to believe that this step will help reduce the polarization in our country's political space. I am convinced that polarization and confrontation between us is the biggest risk to the future of our country, its economic development, and dealing with all kinds of crises," Gakharia said.

The Tbilisi City Court sentenced the chairperson of the United National Movement, Nika Melia, to imprisonment as a measure of restraint.
