Former U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly has responded to Georgian authorities' refusal to accept the EU assistance in his tweet.

"Hard to see this decision as anything other than part of a strategy to move Georgia away from necessary Western-oriented reforms," Ian Kelly said in his tweet.

Julien Crampes, the Interim European Union delegation Head in Georgia, said earlier that the Georgian government notified the EU of its decision to refrain from accepting the macro-financial assistance of EUR 75 mln, which was to be transferred to Georgia before 30 September of 2021, if the country fulfilled its corresponding obligations.

On 31 August, Irakli Gharibashvili said that Georgia will no longer face the need to receive this financial assistance from the EU.

Georgian Dream Chairperson Irakli Kobakhidze also declared that receiving financial support of EUR 75 million from the EU is no longer important for Georgia.
