Irakli Gharibashvili: Abkhazian language is in danger of extinction

The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Gharibashvili, congratulates the public on Abkhazian Language Day.

According to the head of the government, along with Georgian, the Abkhazian language is protected by the Georgian constitution, and the state has a special obligation to preserve and develop it.

"I would like to congratulate Georgia on the Day of the Abkhazian Language, especially the representatives of the Abkhazian community, for whom the Abkhazian language is native. The Abkhazian language, culture, and traditions are an integral part and richness of our common, diverse culture. Along with Georgian, the Abkhazian language is protected by the Constitution of Georgia, and the state has a special obligation to preserve and develop it.

In the conditions of the illegal policy of occupation of the Abkhaz region and the current Russification, the Abkhazian language is in serious danger of disappearing; The Government of Georgia is taking important steps towards its survival and protection, development promotion, and popularization. For the preservation of Abkhazian cultural identity, language development, it is important that our efforts be united and that more young people become interested in learning this unique language. Together we must create a peaceful future in a united European state.
