Kakha Kaladze: the state performed its responsibility

Secretary General of the governing party Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia Kakha Kaladze has released a statement in which he underscored that Georgia is a democratic state, which protects its people's fundamental rights.

"We would like to respond to the ongoing developments and the measures implemented by the police to restore order on Rustaveli Avenue.

Georgia protects the right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression; however, the actions by the opposition outside the Parliament breached the law.

For two days, we have repeatedly warned the organizers of protest rallies that blocking the entrance to the state institution, which is the Parliament, constitutes an unlawful act; however, having realized that they lacked people's support, the rally organizers attempted to aggravate the situation by stirring up destructive and unlawful actions.

Since today morning, these people have kept unlawfully blocking the entrance to the state institution, insulted people entering the Parliament and despite the activists being few in number, they blocked the pedestrian area, with this act being a flagrant violation of law.

Despite the MIA having repeatedly warned them against taking these actions, despite the appeal by the government and our international partners, the leaders of the opposing parties refused to adhere to our constitution. Consequently, the state performed its responsibility and put an end to their unlawful action of blocking the entrance to the Parliament," reads the statement by Mr Kaladze.
