Kelly Degnan: We want to see the democratic process, not the violence

"It is up to the people of Georgia to decide who should be in power; we want to see a democratic process and not violence in the streets," the Ambassador of the United States of America to Georgia Kelly Degnan stated in response to a question, who bears political responsibility for the death of cameraman Alexandre Lashkarava and whether Irakli Gharibashvili should resign or not.

"I want to mention how sad we are about the death of Alexandre Lashkarava. It was a real tragedy and shocking for everyone. We pay our condolences to the family of the deceased, to his friends, colleagues, and journalists who worked with him. Violence in any form is unacceptable. When it comes to intended prevention from exercising constitutionally guaranteed rights, will it be freedom of the press, freedom of the media, freedom of assembly organized by a minority or a majority? There is a commitment to protect citizens, and there is an obligation to prevent violence - this is fundamental," Kelly Degnan said.
