Matthew Bryza defines Saakashvili's arrest as unspeakable disaster for Georgia's reputation

Former U.S. high official Matthew Bryza said in his interview with VOA that Mikheil Saakashvili's arrest is an unspeakable disaster for Georgia's reputation. In Bryza's words, instead of dealing with the existing crisis in the country, the Georgian government has triggered a new one. ''I fear Georgian politics faces an extremely deep crisis,'' he said.

Bryza also stressed that he is deeply concerned about Mikheil Saakashvili's health condition because of his hunger strike. According to the former U.S. high official, it is time that the Georgian government started de-escalation of the situation by refusing to leave the ex-president in jail for six years and convening a proper court for him.

''Hopefully, the Georgian government will opt for the rule of law and make a decision that will not come into conflict with that of international observers,'' he stressed.

Mikheil Saakashvili was detained on 1 October. He declared a hunger strike 18 days ago.
