Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Russia's steps threaten peace process

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expresses its concern over the failure of the 51st round of the Geneva International Discussions by the Russian Federation representatives. The statement issued by the agency reveals the concerns.

According to the agency, steps like this damage the peace process and affect the Georgian authorities and the international community's efforts to address the problems of the conflict-affected population.

"It is noteworthy that according to the decision of the Co-Chairs of the Geneva International Discussions, considering the aggravated security and humanitarian situation in the occupied territories of Georgia, despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the 51st round was scheduled on October 6-7.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the Russian Federation to return to the negotiating table and fulfill its international obligations, including the ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008, mediated by the European Union.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry calls on the international organizations co-chairing the Geneva International Discussions - the European Union, the United Nations, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe - to take effective steps to resume the Geneva talks and make tangible progress in the peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict," reads the statement.
