Nino Lomjaria: The citizens of Georgia are entitled to fair elections

Today's decision by the parliament is a decision to maintain an unjust system, writes Public Defender of Georgia Nino Lomjaria in the social network. According to her introduction of the proportional electoral system was the only tool that could have pulled Georgia through a political crisis.

"I don't know whether political resources are still left, but we must do everything in our power not to hold the next elections by applying the current system.

The citizens of Georgia are entitled to fair elections and the right to engage in political life, with their political will adequately impacting election results," writes the Ombudsman.

The Parliament of Georgia rejected the bill on proportional electoral system at the plenary sitting.

138 deputies were registered on the first attempt, 139 on the second,141 on the third. A total of 113 votes were required to approve the proposed amendments. After the bill was rejected, a number of MPs left the majority.

Leader of the ruling party Bidzina Ivanishvili released his statement on the ongoing developments.
