Nino Lomjaria: We have no improvements in the direction of minorities

The Public Defender held a briefing dedicated to Human Rights Day. Nino Lomjaria, among other issues, assessed the situation of ethnic minorities in Georgia.

"In our report, which will be fully available in March, we also talk about the problems of ethnic minorities. In general, the representation of ethnic minorities in both local and central government or the representative body is not proportionally reflected. Unfortunately, we do not have significant improvements in this direction from year to year," the Public Defender told report.ge when asked about the situation of ethnic minorities.

The report of the Public Defender also refers to the incident in Dmanisi, when the residents of the district physically confronted each other. As Lomjaria pointed out, these facts need special attention when confrontation escalates into a physical confrontation.

"We saw that Georgian citizens physically confronted each other, and the police were there. They could not even take preventive measures, and practically a physical confrontation continued in front of the police. Therefore, this case has been identified by us as one of the most alarming cases in this regard," the ombudsman said.
