Parliament adopted the Forest Code

The Parliament of Georgia adopted the Forest Code on the first hearing. The basic principles and legal instruments of forest management in the Forest Code will form the basis for sustainable and multi-functional forest management.

The Code provides the conservation of Georgia's biological diversity, taking into account its ecological, social and economic functions. The purpose of the Code is maintaining and improving the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the forest.

The new Code abolishes the long-term licenses for timber production. The updated institutional model of forestry management addresses aspects such as stimulating the recreational use of forest resources and increasing the role of forests in rural development which will reduce the pressure on forests.

The new Forest Code requires the employment of professional staff in the forestry sector.
