Parliament approves Draft Law on Distance Learning

The parliament has approved the legislation on distance learning after the first hearing, with 82 MPs having voted for it. Amendments are set to be proposed to the Law on General Education, Higher Education, and Education Quality Improvement.

In accordance with the draft amendments, the term distance learning is defined as learning process via information and communication technology held in educational institutions to cover subjects in the National Curriculum and get general, higher and professional education. In order to adequately carry out distance learning activities, the application of the corresponding approaches and methods is compulsory.

Additionally, higher educational institutions shall choose the corresponding distance learning application or platform and ensure their proper use and functioning.

In accordance with the amendments, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport of Georgia shall decide when to terminate and resume the learning process and introduce distance learning during the pandemic. The Minister shall also approve The Distance Learning Procedure.

The Government of Georgia has initiated the introduction of draft amendments, which are being considered in an urgent manner.
