Parliament fails to elect CEC chairperson and members again

At the plenary session, the Parliament voted for the second time on the candidates for the chairmanship and membership of the CEC nominated by the President of Georgia. None of the candidates received the support of two-thirds of the Parliament.

Giorgi Kalandarishvili, who was nominated for the position of the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission, was supported by 83 deputies, while 11 voted against. The second candidate, Giorgi Santuriani, received the support of 4 deputies, while 11 were against.

Gia Tsatsashvili, who was nominated for one vacant position in the CEC, was supported by 83 deputies; 10 voted against, while the other candidate, Lela Taliuri, received 18 votes, with two deputies against.

Tamar Sartania, who was nominated for the second vacant position of the CEC, was supported by 18 deputies; 2 voted against. The second candidate, Maia Zaridze, received the support of 77 deputies against 10.

Due to the fact that the election of the CEC Chairperson and members could not take place again, according to the legislation, another voting will be held. The candidate who will be supported by a three-fifths majority of the full membership of the Parliament shall be considered elected.

If the necessary votes are not mobilized in all three cases, the candidate will eventually be nominated by the majority, not for five years but six months. Then the selection process will be repeated.
