Philip Reeker: Reformation of judicial system is paramount, and Georgian people deserve this

Acting Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Thomas Reeker said at a press conference that Georgia's democratic institutions have achieved great progress since Georgia declared its independence; however, still much remains to be accomplished.

In Reeker's words, democracy implies continuous painstaking efforts and aspirations for development. ''Reformation of the judicial system is paramount, and Georgian people deserve this. All issues, including transparency, the election of judges, their promotion, disciplinary issues, and others need to be considered,'' Mr. Reeker said, adding that the 19 April agreement was a step forward attesting to the fact that working on reforms should keep going, with the process being immensely inclusive, involving versatile views of the Georgian public.

Mr. Reeker also stated that the Venice commission and different recommendations will assist Georgia in implementing reforms. ''It must be considered that independence of the court and the rule of law are critical for Euro-Atlantic integration and the country's development,'' he stressed.
