Salome Zurabishvil, the President of Georgia, released a statement:
"No matter how difficult the current situation is, we have no right to forget that today, 29 years ago, the Georgian nation restored an independent state through a referendum. At that time, after the 70 years of Soviet prison, people understood the value of freedom and unity and voted for independence. Today is the birthday of the initiator of this miracle, the first President of Georgia. And let the Georgian nation not forget about the power of unity that will help us get through everything!" reads the statement posted on her official Facebook page.
