The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, says that Lithuania is ready to play the mediator role in overcoming the political crisis in Georgia.
Nausėda spoke about the Eastern Partnership countries at a meeting of the Council of Europe. He welcomed the fact that the President of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, plans to visit Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine next week.
"Lithuania is enthusiastically supporting an active neighborhood policy, both with its southern neighbors and Eastern Partnership countries, which are very close to us.
In addition to the issue of the Southern Neighbors, I raised the subject of the Eastern Partnership countries, as these countries receive insufficient attention from EU institutions, I am glad that in response to these expectations, Charles Michel plans to visit the three associated countries next week to discuss not only their reforms but also the possibility of political de-escalation. We are ready to cooperate and act as a mediator in the political crisis in Georgia," Gitanas Nausėda said.
According to him, Russia's aggression in the region continues, and it is affecting political stability.
Nausėda noted that Lithuania supports the EU's ambitious goals throughout the neighborhood, including the Eastern Partnership countries.
"It is important to focus properly on the Eastern Partnership project. We need to develop an ambitious EU agenda with the Eastern Partnership countries, especially Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia. Recent developments show that the lack of such an agenda does not allow us to create a stable, secure, and economically viable environment in these countries," he said.
