President says efforts should be redoubled to free detained doctor

Georgian President Salome Zurabsihvili has responded to the breakaway region's refusal to release the Georgian doctor from custody.

"Despite all efforts and despite active engagement of the International Community in the process, the illegally detained doctor remains in custody. This is aggravating the already seriously bad situation. Once again, I do call upon the International Community to make more strenuous efforts to immediately free the doctor," the President's statement reads.

The so-called Akhalgori Court has left Dr. Vazha Gaprindashvili in custody.

Renowned Georgian doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili has been held in custody since Nov 9.

The de facto government charged Gaprindashvili with an illegal entry of the region; however, the doctor refuses to plead guilty and asserts that he is in the territory of Georgia.
