According to the Administration of the President of Georgia, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has raised the issue of illegally detained Zaza Gakheladze and asked the international community for assistance in releasing him from custody.

The Georgian President also put forth the issue at the face-to-face meeting with António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in Paris within the framework of the International Generation Equality Forum.

They also focused on the grave humanitarian situation in Georgia's breakaway regions, restrictions on mobility, and illegal abductions.

On Jul 11, 2021, occupants wounded and abducted Georgian citizen Zaza Gakheladze in the vicinity of the Skhvilo Fortress after he allegedly disobeyed military men.

The so-called court of the occupied Tskhinvali region has sentenced Zaza Gakhaladze to 12 years and six months behind bars.
