Tea Akhvlediani: Along with Georgian, Abkhazian is a state language and is protected by the Georgian Constitution

"Abkhazian is the state language along with Georgian, and the Constitution of Georgia protects it," the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Tea Akhvlediani stated.

According to her, the Abkhazian language is in grave danger of disappearing.

"The Office of the State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality congratulate Georgia on the Day of the Abkhazian Language, especially those for whom Abkhazian is a native language and the preservation of the Abkhazian language and culture has great value.

The protection and development of the Abkhazian language is a way of preserving the Abkhazian culture and identity, which, together with the constitutional obligation, symbolizes our unity with the Abkhazian society and is one of the crucial principles of the policy of reconciliation and inclusion.

The Abkhazian language needs to be taken care of considering the situation in the Abkhazian region. Unfortunately, during the Russian occupation and ongoing Russification, the Abkhazian language is in danger of disappearing. The Georgian government's efforts, as well as academic, scientific, and cultural circles, are aimed at its survival and development, which will continue in the future.

Today, research institutes have been established, literary works published in the Abkhazian language, and new opportunities to study the Abkhazian language and culture have opened at the higher education level.

Further unification of the society is necessary to contribute to the preservation and broader popularization of the unique Abkhazian language.

We have a shared history and culture with the Abkhazian society; the preservation and development of these values is one of the important factors for peaceful coexistence in a united, strong country," said Tea Akhvlediani.

Abkhazian Language Day is celebrated annually on October 27.
