U.S. Embassy disappointed in 'Judiciary’s rushed decision'

The U.S. Embassy in Georgia has published a below presented statement on Nikoloz Marsagishvili's recent appointment to the post of secretary of the High Council of Justice of Georgia:

"The U.S. Embassy is disappointed in the Judiciary’s rushed decision to hold its Conference of Judges today in the shadow of significant national elections. Important decisions with long-lasting consequences such as filling High Council of Justice vacancies should be taken deliberately, with sufficient transparency and time for consultations and participation by a broad range of qualified candidates. Rushing this process risks undermining public trust in the appointment process, the candidates, and in the Conference of Judges.

An independent and professional judicial system that is trusted by the people is essential to promoting equitable growth and attracting investment by Georgian and foreign businesses. It is imperative that the judiciary select experienced, professional, and independent candidates for all key positions and ensure a more deliberative and measured process in the future."

Nikoloz Marsagishvili has been elected secretary of the High Council of Justice of Georgia today. Out of 251 judges involved in the voting, 248 voted for Marsagishivili.

The newly appointed secretary of the High Council of Justice of Georgia deems the low number of judges and lots of cases the most challenging issues to be tackled in the Council.

At the Conference of Judges today, Tea Leonidze and Ketevan Tsintsadze were also elected judge members of the High Council.

Nikoloz Marsagishvili serves as an acting chairman of Tbilisi City Court, and after being appointed to the post of secretary of the High Council of Justice, he will have to step down as chairman.

Marsagishvili took the post of secretary after Giorgi Mikautadze resigned because he was elected chairperson of the Chamber of Civil Cases.
