Nika Melia has been appointed to the post of the chairman of the United National Movement (UNM), with more than 20,000 citizens involved in the election of the party's head. Nika Melia won 64.9%, while his rival Levan Varshalomidze 36.1%, according to the preliminary results. The party's meeting, at which Melia will officially take the post, is set to be held on Sunday.

Levan Varshalomidze has already congratulated Mr. Melia on his victory.

After its chairman's appointment, the party also published a statement saying that the involvement of more than 20,000 citizens in the election of a political party's chairman is unprecedented and proves that people place trust in the party and those at the helm of it.

The statement goes on to say that in the case of victory, both its members have planned to strengthen similar democratic instruments. The statement also says that the election has been transparent as the party has monitored the process closely, excluding the possibility of fake votes being counted together with the real ones.

The party's former chairman Grigol Vashadze has recently left the party and posted the corresponding information on Facebook.
