The Embassy of the United States of America in Georgia is responding to the developments resulting from Nika Melia's detention as a measure of restraint.
"The current dangerous situation following the Melia ruling stems from decades-long problems with the electoral system and the judicial system. The authorities and opposition must exercise maximum restraint this morning. The way to address the important issues at stake is through peaceful negotiation. We urge all involved to remain calm and avoid violence," reads the statement.
The Tbilisi City Court sentenced the chairperson of the United National Movement, Nika Melia, to imprisonment as a measure of restraint.
