We have entered the sixth era of mass extinction: Zurabishvili

"We have entered the sixth era of mass extinction, which constitutes an emergency state of planetary scale," Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili said in her address at The United Nations Summit on Biodiversity.

At the summit, the Georgian president focused on Georgia's rich and unique biodiversity and its protection and preservation principles.

"We have entered the sixth era of mass extinction, which constitutes an emergency state of planetary scale. Today's dangerous degradation of nature is unprecedented.

Today, we are faced with the necessity of bringing about changes as soon as possible.

As of my country, Georgia is remarkable for its unique biodiversity, thousands of endemic species, and preserved areas stretching over hundreds of thousands of hectares.

Thanks to the Emerald Network, which we have recently joined, we endeavor to achieve our goal. A total of 20% of Georgia's territories are protected areas.

For a country like Georgia, economic development is of utmost significance. However, we aim to apply precautionary measures to ensure the preservation of biodiversity and balance the country's development with the needs of nature," Salome Zurabishvili declared.
