Twenty-eight military servicemen of the Georgian Defense Forces from the contingent in Afghanistan in the NATO Resolute Support Mission tested positive on coronavirus. The Ministry of Defense of Georgia informed report.ge about the incident.
According to the agency, the soldiers arrived in Georgia by a special flight, using a military plane of the German Air Force, a few weeks ahead of schedule. They were accompanied by doctors and other medical personnel from various units in Bundeswehr.
"The medical condition of the military is satisfactory. As for the symptoms, it goes on without complications or complaints. The source of the infection is related to local Afghan personnel.
It should be noted that before arriving in Georgia, military personnel, as personnel under the command of NATO, in full compliance with the rules established by NATO, got placed in special isolation areas. Therefore other Georgian servicemen on mission are not at risk of infection.
The military servicemen will continue their treatment at the Gori Military Hospital, which according to the World Health Organization, is one of the best trained and well-maintained medical institutions in Georgia regarding readiness to fight the pandemic. The rest of the military personnel will go through a two-week quarantine for prevention after returning to the country.
The time of the spread of information on these and other similar issues depends on specific objectives of the defense capability and the aims of the operational readiness. This approach is an internationally accepted practice and is consistent with the information policy of NATO member states. The Ministry of Defense of Georgia actively continues to carry out and monitor all effective preventive and recommendation measures, which will ensure the maintenance of the Defense Forces' positive dynamics and the country in general," the Ministry of Defense stated.
