Alarming food inspection: Illegal Sudan dye in foodstuffs

Organization "Momkhmarebeli" (Consumer) has published inspection results after collecting product samples at different supermarkets. Out of the tested 36 products, forbidden supplements have been detected in three of them.

"We bought 36 different types of food products and sent them to Eurofins laboratory in Germany to test them for inedible food dyes, with illegal colorant Sudan-1 detected in three of them.

Foodstuffs produced in Georgia and exported to foreign countries such as red pepper, ajika, tkhemali, tomato sauce, tomato pasta, and ketchup have been tested.

The addition of Sudan-1 dyes to food products is forbidden; however, some producers still use them to give products a reddish color. The regular consumption of these dyes is immensely harmful to health as it promotes the development of tumors and gene degradation," the statement by the organization reads.
