Anzor Erkomaishvili, the founder of the ensemble "Rustavi," died at the age of 80. The information about his death got posted on the official page of the ensemble "Rustavi."

Anzor Erkomaishvili was placed in The First University Clinic with a coronavirus diagnosis. He was on managed breathing.

Anzor Erkomaishvili graduated from the choir-conducting faculty of the Tbilisi State Conservatory. As a student, he began translating Gurian hymns and folk songs into notes. He founded the vocal ensemble "Gordela" to study these songs at the Conservatory.

From 1968 he was the head of the vocal ensemble "Rustavi." He has published seven Georgian (Gurian) folk songs recorded and deciphered by him. He prepared a collection, "Gurian Folk Songs," for publication. He is the author of the books "Strange Sound," "Grandpa," "Black Thrush complained."

Erkomaishvili received the Presidential Order of Excellence for his outstanding contribution to the development and popularization of Georgian choral music, folklore, for his fruitful pedagogical, public work and outstanding service to the country;

He has also received the Ivane Javakhishvili Prize, the Shota Rustaveli State Prize, the Ilia Chavchavadze Prize, the Ekvtime Takaishvili Prize, the Iakob Gogebashvili Prize, and the Albert Schweitzer Prize.
