According to the Special Penitentiary Service, cases of COVID-19 infection have been eliminated in Geguti Prison.
According to them, no new cases of coronavirus have been reported in the facility since August 31.
"None of the cases of COVID-19 were detected during intensive PCR testing in N14 (Geguti) penitentiary institution.
Fourteen convicts from the N14 facility remain in the quarantine space at the Khoni Psychiatric Hospital. All of them are in good health and will return to the place of punishment in case of testing and negative answer provided by the protocol.
In order to prevent the spread of the virus, prisoners are separated as soon as cases of infection are identified. Also, prisoners are tested twice a month by PCR.
The Penitentiary Service started the process of voluntary immunization of convicts on May 18 with the support of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) and the Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of the virus and is still in progress. At this stage, 55% of the convicts in the N14 (Geguti) penitentiary institution has already been vaccinated," the statement said.
