"OPEN LETTER FROM GEORGIAN AMERICAN HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS

The United States Congress

November 12, 2021

First St. SE

Washington, D.C., 20510

USA

Dear Honorable Senators and Representatives,

We, the Georgian American healthcare professionals seek your support. The political situation in Georgia has rapidly deteriorated in recent weeks, threatening former President Mikheil Saakashvili's life and the nation's hard-won freedom.

Since October 1 this year, President Saakashvili has been in a Georgian jail on politically motivated charges. In the absence of a free judiciary, he has resorted to a hunger strike ever since. Shockingly, his jail doctors, administration, and Georgia's political leadership are working in unison to neutralize President Saakashvili politically and physically, the way the Kremlin treats its political opponents. The President is under constant surveillance and psychological torture, with continued attempts to discredit his hunger strike. On November 9, Amnesty International described his treatment as selective justice and political revenge. President Saakashvili's doctor has assessed his condition as critical. He desperately needs to be transferred to an adequate medical facility for emergency treatment.

On November 8, he was moved by force to a high-risk prison medical facility, where he was physically abused instead of treatment. We, who have found the United States as the land of opportunity and the beacon of hope and liberty, pride our Georgian-Americanness. With these values and principles in mind, we urge you to send a strong and clear message to the Government of Georgia to guarantee President Saakashvili's fundamental right to life and transfer him to a general hospital for immediate medical treatment. Safeguarding President Saakashvili's right to life would be the catalyst of Georgia's future adherence to human rights, the principles of freedom, and democracy.

We trust that the United States has not abandoned its ideals and will not abandon its ally in the South Caucasus. For us medical professionals, human life and dignity come before any political position and dispute. With that in mind, we are strongly hoping for your swift intervention to protect President Mikheil Saakashvili's life and health and support Georgian democracy.

We remain ready to provide further input should you deem it necessary.

Sincerely,

Georgian-American Healthcare Professionals"
