According to the Chairperson of the Government of Adjara, Tornike Rizhvadze, the public holiday Beshumoba will not be celebrated on a large scale this year.
"Due to the increased risks, it will be difficult for us to celebrate the public holiday Beshumoba. We will have to take into account the recommendations and reduce the amount of the crowd. I hope that our citizens, especially the residents of mountainous Adjara, will understand this, and we will follow the recommendations from the relevant agencies," Rizhvadze said at a briefing at the government administration.
In mountainous Adjara, this tradition has been practiced for centuries. It unites many guests from year to year. Beshumoba, also called Shuamtoba, is held on the first weekend of August. Public celebrations usually end with a traditional horse race.
