Bidzina Kulumbegov: Banning public transport negatively impacts people's lives

Allergist/Immunologist Bidzina Kulumbegov defines the Georgian authorities' decision to prolong coronavirus restrictions after the epidemiologic situation had stabilized in the country as irrational. According to him, the decision will make people's already hard lives harder.

As Kulumbegov says, he supports a consistent policy: initially, restrictions were required to contain the pandemic and manage the situation, but now when the country has passed the peak of coronavirus and is on the downward slope, extending restrictions is irrational.

"Banning public transport negatively impacts people's lives, as young people and low-income citizens cannot manage without it. These people find it very hard to move from one place to another, visit stores, even grocery stores, and supermarkets. It goes without saying that they cannot visit their loved ones in hospitals. This is our major humanitarian issue," Kulumbegov stressed.

The Coordination Council decided to prolong restrictions until 1 February. They were first set to be eased on 16 January.
