Council of Religions: Violence against people because they want to pray is not allowed

Religious associations, members of the Council of Religions under the Public Defender, condemn the confrontation between Christian and Muslim citizens in the village of Buknari.

Those who signed the statement are calling on the authorities to prevent what has happened and ensure freedom of religion in the fight against xenophobia and hatred.

"We are concerned about the latest developments in society. Insulting and discriminating against people or religious communities on religious grounds, as well as manifestations of persecution, is alarming," the statement said.

Religious associations say that violence against people is not allowed because they want to pray and open a place of worship.

The confrontation between the Christian and Muslim population began in late December, after the opening of the shrine by Muslims in the village of Buknari, Chokhatauri Municipality. Part of the Christian population opposed the opening.

A confrontation took place between Muslims and Christians in the center of the village on January 12. Two Muslim minors were injured as a result.

Officers of the Guria Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs have detained one person in connection with the incident.

The Mufti of the Muslim Division of all Georgia arrived in Chokhatauri and called on the population to calm down.
