The official award ceremony of the representatives of the Diaspora with special merit was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

"Diaspora Award 2021" was opened by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Davit Zalkaliani. The event was attended by representatives of Georgia's legislative and executive authorities and other invited guests.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "Diaspora Award 2021" aims to recognize the merits of compatriots living abroad, who have achieved professional success in the countries they live in and also contributed to the development of Georgia and the promotion of Georgian image, culture, sports, and science.

The winners were revealed in several nominations. The award for the contribution to the popularization of Georgian culture was given to American actor and director Irakli Kavsadze, pianist Lekso Toradze and the representative of the Georgian Diaspora in Turkey, Omar Faruk Demirtashi. Gaston Buachidze, a scientist and translator, working in France, and Lia Chokoshvili, the head of Georgian language courses in Oxford, were awarded for their contribution to the development of science.

The award for the contribution to the development of sports was given to the successful Georgian kickboxer Giga Chikadze, and the awards for the contribution to public diplomacy were given to Mamuka Tsereteli, a Georgian businessman working in the United States, and Nodar Giorgadze, a Georgian businessman and philanthropist working in Slovakia.

Khatia Khabuliani, who helps the Rustavi Children and the Elderly Shelter and has held a number of charity concerts in the Netherlands, won the award for her contribution to charity, and Victor Sirelson, who has been supporting Georgian artists in the United States since 1996 and has founded numerous Georgian dance and song groups won the award for her contribution to charity as well.

In the nomination, the Foreign Friend of Georgia awards were given to Enders Wimbush, who has been a Georgian lobbyist in the United States since the 1990s, and to Laszlo Borhi, who founded the Department of Kartvelology at the University of Budapest.

The event was organized in cooperation with the International International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and the EU-funded project ENIGMMA (Strengthening Migration Management in Georgia).
