The Government of Georgia discussed and approved two draft laws prepared by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture at today's meeting, the establishment and Management of the Erusheti National Park and Creation and Management of Borjomi Kharagauli Protected Areas.

"Establishment of Erusheti Park opens a new perspective for transboundary cooperation. Erusheti Park borders with Turkey. Such cooperation is essential for the preservation of unique species of animals and the protection of species of flora," Levan Davitashvili, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture said.

As for Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, it is planned to expand it in the Adigeni municipality.

According to Levan Davitashvili, the area covers 4 137 hectares. At present, Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is 60,000 hectares, but after the expansion, it will be about 65,000 hectares.

"We, on the one hand, want to preserve biodiversity, and on the other hand, to develop economic opportunities around protected areas, including ecotourism development, which became popular in recent years," Davitashvili said after the cabinet meeting.

According to the Minister, in 2019, the area of protected areas increased by 70144 hectares (10.5%) compared to the previous year and made 9.6% of the country.
