Georgia Ombudsman asks to lift movement restrictions on March 21

Public Defender of Georgia Nino Lomjaria and the Council of National Minorities requested the Georgian government to temporarily lift the restriction on movement to celebrate the Novruz Bayram holiday on March 21.

Under the statement, Novruz has been celebrated in Georgia for centuries (it is also mentioned in "The Knight in the Panther's Skin"), and since 2010, it has been a national holiday.

Novruz is celebrated in the municipalities where ethnic Azerbaijanis live.

Public Defender Lomjaria says that in 2020 due to restrictions for the COVID-19 pandemic, the holiday was not fully celebrated, and in 2021 its celebration is also under threat.

Together with the Council of National Minorities, the Public Defender of Georgia expressed the hope that the Georgian government will take into account and satisfy the request of a part of Georgia's citizens and, on March 21, will temporarily lift the restriction on movement at night.
