Georgia's Foreign Ministry denies info on military cargo transfer

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia denies reports on alleged military transportation through Georgia's airspace and says the stories are speculative.

"Georgia has closed its airspace for military flights, which we have announced publicly. Concerning civil and humanitarian flights, in this part, Georgia fully complies with its international obligations. Simultaneously, we want to clarify that this type of flying does not require special permits, and civil flights in airspace are carried out based on notification and the provision of right information,'' reads the statement.

"Flights in Georgia's airspace comply with ICAO's international norms and rules," the ministry reports.

"To ensure the safety of international air transport and avoid the use of civil flights for other purposes, we urge all parties, both receiving countries, and shippers, to strictly control the air transport of civil and humanitarian goods.

Carrier countries are primarily responsible for the operation of civil flights following the Chicago Convention's principles and standards, which prohibits the deliberate use of civil flights for military purposes. Georgia will react to violations severely, and the violators will be held responsible by international law," the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
