The Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia, together with the Minister of Health Ekaterine Tikaradze, visited the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Richard Lugar Center for Public Health Research today.

During the meeting with the staff of the Center, Giorgi Gakharia emphasized the great contribution of the NCDC in the fight against the pandemic and noted that thanks to the Center, Georgia took necessary preventive measures before announcing the pandemic. According to the Prime Minister, its because of the professionalism and great efforts of the Center's staff that the country's epidemiological situation is controllable at this stage, as the NCD plays a key role in the fight against COVID-19 - epidemiological surveillance, testing, laboratory diagnosis, and coordination.

The Prime Minister also got acquainted with the main principles of the work of the Lugar Research Center, which was established in Georgia with the support of the United States and handed over to the National Center for Disease Control in May of 2013.

Amiran Gamkrelidze, director of the National Center for Disease Control, and Paata Imnadze, the deputy director, provided the prime minister with detailed information about the research, including COVID-19, conducted at Lugar laboratory. The Center started doing COVID-19 research since January 30. With the expansion of testing, 18 laboratories got involved in the diagnosis. Seventy-three surveys were conducted daily in March, but now testing will be extended during the summer. It will reach 4,000 in August, and for the fall, up to 10,000 samples per day are planned to be tested.

The Prime Minister of Georgia noted that the existence of a laboratory equipped with the latest standards in Georgia allows the country to diagnose and monitor various dangerous diseases effectively, and in some cases - exclusively in the region. Giorgi Gakharia thanked Georgia's strategic partner - the United States of America, as a result of which the country's most important institution is functioning successfully.
