Has India's new mutant strain of COVID-19 entered Georgia?

Director-General of Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center, Tengiz Tsertsvadze, says that the Indian COVID-19 variant has not yet been detected in Georgia.

In Tsertsvadze's words, new strains are not substantially different from one another; however, the British strain circulating in Georgia is more virulent and infects children more easily.

''An Indian strain has not yet been confirmed in Georgia. The likelihood of the Indian strain spreading countrywide is lower than the British strain. The British variant has been spread throughout Europe, and as Georgia is part of Europe, we failed to avoid its spread,'' he said.
