International Association of Georgian Doctors demand Saakashvili's transfer to multi-profile clinic

The International Association of Georgian Doctors has released a statement on different medical risks ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili faces after almost a month of being on a hunger strike and the necessity of his transfer to a multi-profile active treatment civilian hospital.

According to the association members, as they have been informed, 585 inmates were transferred to a similar clinic last year, and Saakashvili's case will not make a precedent.

The statement says that on the 27-day of his hunger strike, Mikheil Saakashvili faces a number of risks, such as the inborn moderate form of thalassemia developing into severe, with this making the specialist's involvement in the patient's treatment mandatory. Also, as the statement says, the innate Gilbert's syndrome may cause hyperbilirubinemia and hemolysis, with the list of possible multi-organic complications (which require multi-profile treatment) going on.

Also, the statement says that hunger may result in the dysfunction of the cardiovascular system, cause glycose deficit-related issues, and B1 vitamin deficit resulting in neurological abnormalities.

"We underscore that our statement has no political overtones and is based on professional, humane, and global reputational principles. On these grounds, we demand that the third president of Georgia be transferred to a multi-profile hospital, where he will be provided with timely and qualified medical treatment, and his right to live will be protected in this manner," the statement reads.

The signatories to the statement are the doctors as follows: Sopio Beridze, Revaz Bochorishvili, Zurab Guruli, Nino Isakadze, Giorgi Kavkasidze, Vakhtang Kaloiani, Giorgi Kamkamidze, Bidzina Kulumbegov, Archil Marshania, Mamuka Machaidze, Davit Mrelashvili, Ani Kavtaradze, Vladimer Chachanidze, and Grigol Khurtsidze.

Mikheil Saakashvili was detained on 1 October. He declared a hunger strike 27 days ago.
