The procedures for replacing lost passports are changing. The purpose of the new regulations is preventing the misuse of lost and canceled documents.

According to the amendments, a citizen of Georgia in case of loss of a passport both in Georgia and abroad should immediately notify the law enforcement agency or other authorized facility and receive a confirmation of the loss (or theft) of the passport, which together with other documents must be submitted in order to get a new passport. This type of document received abroad does not require legalization and certification by apostille.

An application for a lost or stolen passport to obtain a new passport must be submitted by a citizen of Georgia to the Service Development Agency, Community Centers or Justice Houses and a citizen of Georgia abroad to the Georgian Embassy or Consulate.

Upon submission of documents the Service Development Agency will cancel the lost or stolen passport, provide Interpol with the information with protection of personal data standard and issue a new passport to the citizen.
