Mikheil Chkhenkeli: We celebrate one of the most important dates in the history of Georgia

The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Mikheil Chkhenkeli congratulates the society on Mother Language Day.

"Today, we celebrate one of the most important dates in the modern history of Georgia - Mother Language Day. Forty-three years ago, on April 14, 1978, the population of Georgia rebelled against the Soviet Union's intention to deprive the Georgian language of its state language status. The massive peaceful protest demonstration has preserved the state language, which is indeed an event of great state importance. I express my respect and gratitude to the people who, four decades ago, at great risk, defended and preserved the mother language for generations - a unique Georgian language with a centuries-old history. Care for the Georgian language is one of the state's main priorities, as the mother language is not only the language we speak and communicate, but it is a precondition for the country's identity, unity, and peaceful development," Mikheil Chkhenkeli stated.
