Ombudsman: State shall protect freedom of belief for all

Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria has responded to the religious conflict between Muslims and Christians in the Buknari village, the Chokhatauri municipality, and said that each citizen of Georgia is entitled to the right of freedom of religion pursuant to the constitution of Georgia.

The ombudsman has appealed to law enforcement bodies to prevent the conflict and ensure the safe and peaceful performance of Muslims' religious practices.

Lomjaria said that as the reports have it, Muslim locals bought a residential house in which they gathered to pray. This sparked protest in local Orthodox Christians, with the protest later developing into a conflict.

Public Defender Lomjaria stressed that each citizen of Georgia is entitled to perform religious practices, and 'the state shall ensure the freedom of belief for all.'

"Additionally, the state shall ensure social peace between the representatives of different religions without taking sides and being neutral. The country's democracy and pluralism rests on precisely neutrality and unbiasedness," the ombudsman stressed.
