"We do not believe that the expiration of these medications had any impact on the implementation of the goals of the hepatitis C elimination program," reads a statement by the American pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, published by the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health, and Social Affairs of Georgia.

"As of 2019, the Georgian government has already successfully treated 58,000 people through medicines provided by our organization. Gilead Sciences continues to support the program in Georgia. We are working together with the Ministry of Health to ensure that Georgian citizens with hepatitis C continue to have access to the latest medications," the company said in a statement.

According to the report by the State Audit Office of Georgia, GEL 560 645 083 medicines received free of charge under the hepatitis C elimination program have expired.
