Third coronavirus wave hits Georgia, health official says

Director-General of Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center, Tengiz Tsertsvadze, says that the third coronavirus wave has hit Georgia; however, in his words, the third wave is not of countrywide scale.

According to Mr. Tsertsvadze, the global coronavirus cases hit their record high today after reaching 585,000.

Tsertsvadze said that Georgia is faced with the beginning of the third wave, and the situation in the country is not catastrophic.

''We are not yet faced with a countrywide coronavirus wave as it is in Europe and the US. Our healthcare sector has proved well-prepared so far. Unlike November and December, hospitals are not under much pressure, and no one has yet complained about ambulance crews' late arrivals, a failure to contact a family doctor or late hospitalizations. The health ministry has already prepared 5,000 hospital beds, and resources are even more. Today, the country has 3,600 hospitalized patients and 1,400-bed capacity,'' Mr. Tsertsvadze declared.
