The Summer Olympics start in Tokyo today. From July 23 to August 8, Tokyo will host the Olympic Games, which will feature more than 11 000 athletes from 206 countries. This will be the second time in history that the Summer Olympics will be held in the Japanese capital.
Tokyo 2020 was supposed to take place last summer, but the organizers decided to postpone the tournament due to the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, the event still retained its name.
Sports activities will be held at 42 stadiums in Tokyo. Tokyo 2020 will officially open on July 23, at 15:00, at the New National Stadium. This stadium can hold 68 000 spectators, but due to COVID-19, the number of spectators will be limited.
Georgia will be represented by 35 athletes in 11 categories at the Tokyo Olympics.
Nino Salukvadze will be the flag bearer of the Georgian Olympic team at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games on July 23, together with another Olympic champion, Lasha Talakhadze. It should be noted that Nino Salukvadze is the only female athlete in the history of the Olympic Games who will compete in the Ninth Olympic Games.
