Angela Merkel calls on Azerbaijan and Armenia to negotiate

German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke to the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan about the need for an immediate ceasefire and a return to the negotiating table. The German Cabinet of Ministers revealed their position in a statement.

"Chancellor Angela Merkel had a phone call with the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, yesterday and with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, today. During the talks, the politicians discussed the escalation of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Chancellor stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire and a return to the negotiating table. The OSCE Minsk Group offers an appropriate forum for this. Neighboring countries should promote a peaceful settlement of the issue," the German government said in a statement.

On September 27, the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan became extremely tense. The parties report military clashes and casualties.
