Argentina announces three days of national mourning for the death of football legend Diego Maradona, Argentine president Alberto Fernández announced Wednesday evening.
The national mourning period starts immediately, Fernández said in a statement. It is not yet clear what activities the Argentine government will undertake to commemorate Maradona.
“It is a very sad day for all Argentines,” Fernández said in conversation with Argentine media. “It’s a terrible loss. I couldn’t believe it and asked my people to find out if it’s really true, it’s fake news.
“If anyone deserves a place in the Argentinians’ memory, it is Diego. He has only made us happy and fought to make us stand out in the world.”
On Wednesday, Maradona’s death was announced at the age of 60.
