The Belarusian opposition is planning a rally on the day of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Opponents of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the planned event aims to protest election fraud and to show the people of Belarus that the current regime is unacceptable.

Belarusian opposition leader Pavel Latushko called the situation in Belarus the worst terror that Europe has ever seen in 40 years and called on the EU to impose tougher sanctions.

Protests in Belarus began after Alexander Lukashenko was declared the August 9 presidential election winner with 80 percent of the votes.
