The main buildings of the 14th-Century Shuri Castle, the seat of the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, World Heritage-protected site has been gutted by a fire.

More than 20 fire brigades were fighting the blaze. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is yet unknown.

600-year-old Japanese castle was awarded the status of National Treasure of Japan in 1933.
