Today, on May 10, Azerbaijan celebrates the 98th anniversary of the national leader, Heydar Aliyev.

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the First Vice President, Mehriban Aliyeva, will visit the grave of Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honor and pay tribute to the memory of the former President.

Heydar Aliyev was born on May 10, 1923, in the city of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. From 1941, Heydar Aliyev headed the department at the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Nakhchivan.

In 1969, at the Plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev was appointed as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. In December 1982, he was elected a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He later became the First Secretary of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. For twenty years, Heydar Aliyev was the Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and for five years was Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

In October 1987, Heydar Aliyev resigned from the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union to protest the policies of Secretary-General Michael Gorbachev.

In connection with the bloody tragedy staged by the Soviet troops in Baku on January 20, 1990, Heydar Aliyev addressed the Azerbaijani representation in Moscow and demanded the punishment of the perpetrators and organizers of the crimes committed against the Azerbaijani people. He left the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in July 1991 in protest of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh and the two-pronged policy of the USSR leadership. After returning to Azerbaijan in July 1990, he was elected a member of the left the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1991-1993, he was the Chairperson of the Supreme Assembly of the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan, Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

When the country escalated into a civil war and the threat of losing its independence due to the extreme aggravation of the state crisis in 1993, the Azerbaijani people demanded that Heydar Aliyev come to power.

In 1993 and 1998, he was elected on the post of the President of Azerbaijan twice.

On December 12, 2003, the National Leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, died at a Cleveland clinic in the United States.

Heydar Aliyev has been awarded the Order of Lenin four times; he has also received the Order of the Red Star, numerous medals, twice the title of Hero of Socialist Labor. He was also awarded the highest award of Ukraine - Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise and the highest award of Turkey - Ataturk Peace Prize.

The historical destiny of Azerbaijan, which spans more than 30 years, is inextricably linked to the name of Heydar Aliyev. During these years, the revival of the people in socio-political, economic, and cultural life is connected to his name.

It should be noted that the history of the creation of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces is closely linked to the name of Heydar Aliyev.

The contribution of Heydar Aliyev in the history of Georgia is significant. Heydar Aliyev laid the foundation not only for the modernity of Georgia and Azerbaijan but also for the whole of Transcaucasia. The energy corridor, known as the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, and the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, was created thanks to Heydar Aliyev.
